Commentary on Writing in a pompous style begs the question: Are we still confident in ourselves?

By You Guan (People's Daily Online)    15:54, July 03, 2018

News written in a pompous style, represented by such expressions as “on your knees,” “cry your eyes out,” “scared silly” have been all the rage recently. This way of writing harms the credibility of the media, pollutes the ecology of public opinion, and is not conducive to fostering a green cyberspace.

Writers should move away from this style of writing and use concise language, facts, and innovative solutions, as put forward by General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Xi Jinping, so as to advocate a clean and honest writing style.

The style of writing reflects social mentality and values. The pompous style of news writing will, to a large extent, distort some mindsets and run counter to mainstream values. Some sensationalist headlines imposed on China like “the world’s first” are incredibly exaggerated, and this blind optimism is worth rethinking.

Indeed, China has accomplished several world-renowned achievements in its course of development and is at the forefront of many fields. However, this is no reason to brag.

The false information published through new media can influence hundreds of millions of users and there will be some misunderstandings and even misjudgments worse still, this could inadvertently hurt China’s international image. Self-deception and boasting will not bring about true self-confidence and pride, nor will it win China respect.

Throughout the country’s 40 years of reform and opening-up, especially since the 18th CPC National Congress, extraordinary achievements have been made through hard work of the Chinese people under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China and under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.

General Secretary Xi pointed out in a speech at a ceremony marking the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Party that of all the political parties, countries, and peoples in the world today, none have as much cause to be confident as the Communist Party of China, the People’s Republic of China, and the Chinese people.

The Chinese people should have confidence in their chosen path, guiding theories, political system, and most importantly, in their culture, and have a down-to-earth and pragmatic attitude in their work. Only in this way can China build a moderately prosperous society in all respects and achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
