Big data means more success and risk in blind dating

(People's Daily Online)    16:57, June 06, 2018

Chinese online matchmaking platforms are using big data to help users to find the right person more efficiently. However, the feedback given by users is not always positive.

An investigation on big data dating has found that 80 percent of the young single respondents regard platforms supported by big data as an efficient tool for blind dating, according to thepaper.cn.

App designer Yan Bei is a positive example of people who want to find love with the help of big data. Yan said such apps backed up by big data arrange more suitable blind dates for her according to her views, character and habits.

Yan attributes 30 to 40 percent of her dating success to this type of app, but she thinks data isn't everything and is unable to influence her final decision. Other factors that cannot be quantified, such as personality, can only be learnt through face to face interactions.

There are also concerns about big data, such as suspicion around information authenticity and worries about personal information disclosure.

Li Miaomiao (not her real name) in Shenzhen expressed negative opinions towards big data dating. She once unknowingly dated a married man because the platform failed to identify that the guy in question had faked his age and marital status.

Some users also worry about their data security, because having their private details used for analysis could easily make them transparent online.
