Chinese crayfish to add flavor to 2018 World Cup

(People's Daily Online)    11:26, June 05, 2018

Some 100,000 Chinese crayfish will soon begin their journey to the upcoming 2018 World Cup, this year held in Russia, adding some extra Chinese flavor to the games, Chinanews.com reported.

The crayfish will be transported by a China-Europe freight train from the central Chinese city of Wuhan all the way to Moscow in mid-June.

The crayfish have been specially selected for the 2018 World Cup. They come from one of China’s major crayfish production areas in Jingzhou, Hubei province, which has undergone strict quality control.

The crayfish will be transported under a cold chain system so that they are still fresh when they arrive in Russia. Upon arrival, they will be transported to local restaurants and bars through offline channels.

“The crayfish have already been cooked in China. You can enjoy your crayfish after reheating them for a mere five minutes,” says Cai Xin, general manager of an online produce marketplace for the China National Agricultural Development Group Company, an initiator of the crayfish exportation plan.

According to Cai, the crayfish will be prepared in a variety of seasonings to suit the differing tastes of football fans from all over the world. Besides the heavily spiced crayfish favored by Chinese people, options will include a garlicky flavor alongside one that uses 13 different spices.

Cai added that although Russia has not been one of China’s main crayfish export destinations thus far, it's hoped that exports in preparation for the World Cup will facilitate a connection between China’s crayfish and Russia's consumption market so as to broaden the exportation channels.
