China’s world-leading 5G technology will bring users faster and better Internet service, People’s Daily reported on Thursday.
5G is set to see transmission speeds reach 10 gigabits per second, almost 100 times faster than the speed of the current 4G generation, so downloading a HD movie in more than a few seconds will be a thing of the past.
In addition to its high speed, 5G Internet also boosts high stability, low delays and super large terminal networks. These features can provide strong technological support for automated driving and Internet of Things such as smart homes.
Despite such tempting benefits, there is still a long way to go until the latest network technology’s full-scale use and its country-wide application.
The 5G network requires corresponding infrastructure and only newly-designed phones have access to 5G Internet. Automated driving in the 5G network environment also has to face more tests, for example how to react to traffic lights as well as various weather and road conditions. Moreover, 5G shows fewer advantages in information security protection, posing a challenge to developers.
The 5G technology tests began in 2016. Many places in China, such as Shanghai, have started trial operations of the fast-speed Internet service which is expected to enter full commercial use in 2020.
The country aims to speed up broadband coverage and bring down Internet rates. It’s clear that in 2018, China will accelerate its development of the 5G technological industry and integrate growth of 5G with its vertical industries so as to prepare for its large-scale application.
