China’s Beidou navigation system to launch mobile app in May

(People's Daily Online)    15:08, April 11, 2018

China’s Beidou navigation and positioning system is expected to launch its first-ever mobile app on May 1, which can help drivers to pinpoint locations with an incredible accuracy of 1 meter, media reported.

According to Thepaper.cn, the upcoming app can provide navigation services in 21 provinces and regions in China. The report also noted that the launch of Beidou app will help China get rid of dependency on U.S. designed GPS systems, thereby reducing risks of GPS interference.

Following China’s launch of two satellites into orbit for the Beidou-3 family in March, the system is expanding and will eventually consist of 35 satellites and is expected to provide global services upon completion in 2020. Once fully completed, Beidou will provide an alternative global navigation satellite system to the U.S. owned GPS system and is expected to be more accurate than the latter.

According to Xinhua, all the key components of the BeiDou navigation satellites including traveling-wave tube amplifiers, microwave switches, and high-power current source controllers are made in China, ending reliance on imports.

As of 2017, more than 40,000 fishing vessels and around 4.8 million commercial vehicles in China have been equipped with the Beidou system, which have already helped in the rescue of over 10,000 fishermen during the past five years. It also helped reduce the rate of major road traffic accidents and injuries in 2016 by almost half when compared to 2012 numbers.
