By Larry Wang (People's Daily Online)    11:19, February 11, 2018

Johannesburg-David Monyae, the dean of the Confucius Institute of University of Johannesburg in South Africa, expressed his views on the educational cooperation between China and South Africa.

David told reporters that China is ahead of Africa in education and has excellent university education and outstanding innovative capabilities. In particular, China's achievements over the past three decades have provided Africa with a model for learning and reference. Africa's education needs to learn from it to solve its own problems.

"Mandela once said that the power of education is vast and can contribute to the nation's construction and harmonious development." "Education is the most powerful weapon you can change the world." South Africa currently needs to strengthen the infrastructure construction, and the maintenance of public facilities and places such as roads and airports also need educated people with these skills. In terms of personnel education, South Africa should learn more from China and train more talents in this area.

David said the Confucius Institute at the University of Johannesburg also played an important role in educational exchanges between the two countries. Language is the bridge of interaction between the peoples of the two countries. Mandarin courses are now becoming more and more important in South Africa. More South Africans want to learn Chinese, especially young people. At present, Confucius Institute offers Chinese courses. At the same time, it also welcomes Chinese to learn the local language of South Africa and further deepen the interaction and understanding between the two peoples. Second, the Confucius Institute is still helping people to study abroad and learn about the cultures of different countries.

Last year, more than 1,000 people enrolled in the Johns Hopkins Confucius Institute at Chinese courses, including local high school students, college students and master students. The courses also include General Chinese, Business Chinese, and Tourism Chinese. Professor Kong's martial arts courses have also attracted a large number of locals. It is estimated that the enrollment of relevant courses this year will surpass that of last year.

According to David, Confucius Institutes offer more than just students. They also welcome the public to register. The deadline for application in 2018 is February 12. At the same time, class time is also divided into two kinds of Monday to Friday and the weekend, for different groups to choose.

David said: "The year 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Africa." President Xi said that trade between China and South Africa will continue to develop and the relations between the two peoples in culture, sports and education will also continue to strengthen. " He believes that under the premise of enhancing cultural exchanges between the two countries, the relations between South Africa and China and between the peoples of the two countries will also be closer and lasting.
