China’s Chunyun enters new era

(People's Daily Online)    17:23, February 02, 2018

China’s high-speed trains, boasting creative design and smart technology, have become the main force behind the 40-day-long Chunyun, or Spring Festival travel rush, which kicked off on Feb. 1.

More than 5,600 high-speed trains will serve every day, accounting for 65 percent of the total number, transporting over 60 percent of all travelers. The Fuxing bullet train, China’s first self-developed bullet train, now serves over half of the country and connects major cities across the compass.

China launched Fuxing, which means rejuvenation, in May 2017. The train tops other countries in terms of speed (over 350 km/h). The technology and equipment of Fuxing bullet train has taken the lead, and for the most part, follows Chinese standards.

It provides a comfortable travel experience with soft seats, sockets, and Wi-Fi service, said an experienced passenger, adding that Fuxing is superior to other bullet trains in Japan and Germany in terms of passenger experience.

China’s railway has entered into a new era owing to comprehensive reform, and the Fuxing is just the tip of the iceberg. In 2017, more features of travelling by railway have been developed, like buying tickets on social network platform WeChat, face-scanning technology to quicken lines, and online meal booking to name just a few.

AI and automated equipment have been put into use to realize automated driving. The Beijing-Zhangjiakou line is expected to start operation in 2022 for the Beijing Winter Olympics, according to Lu Fudong, general manager of China Railway.

In addition to the high-speed trains, slow trains will keep running to make travel more convenient for rural areas. These slow trains do not turn a profit, but offer premier choice for locals no matter in Chunyun or other days.
