Op-Ed: CPC becomes more transparent, confident, and engaged with the world

By Curtis Stone (People's Daily Online)    14:59, December 01, 2017

Recently, a regulation to promote transparency in Party affairs was passed at an important political meeting in China. For China’s ruling party, promoting transparency is “an important step” for the implementation of the spirit of the 19th Party Congress and a must for the development of what China calls intra-party democracy and socialist democratic politics.

The move was seen by many as an important way to enhance governance and strengthen supervision within the Communist Party of China, the largest political party in the world, with 89 million members.

But perhaps more importantly, the move indicates that China’s ruling party is embracing openness and transparency.

This trend toward more openness and transparency in the Party is vital for its future. President Xi Jinping has called corruption the “greatest threat our Party faces,” and increased transparency is an important step to keep that grave and complex threat in check.

This trend can also been seen on the world stage. The CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties High-level Meeting, which kicked off in Beijing on Nov. 30, is the first high-level dialogue between the CPC and the world’s political parties, providing a much-needed opportunity for China to learn from the world and the world from China.

The regulation and the dialogue were widely ignored by foreign media outlets, but carry great significance, both for the strict governance of the Party and the future of global affairs.

As an editorial in the Chinese-language edition of People’s Daily pointed out, the dialogue shows that China is willing to share its experiences in governing the world’s largest political party and the world’s largest population with other countries, and is sincere in learning from others.

And the effort to improve dialogue among the world’s political parties and jointly explore ways to work together to set a course for the future could not have come at a better time, as problems continue to mount for the global community and major Western countries openly struggle to find their way in this new era of global politics.

This shows that China’s ruling party is not, as some claim, a “black box,” but a form of democracy that is constantly improving and changing with the times. All this also shows that China’s ruling party is more transparent and more confident than ever before and more willing than ever before to communicate openly with the world to co-build a better world.
