US report that Chinese media involved in spying and propaganda “sheer fiction”: China

A report to the U.S. Congress released on Wednesday accused Chinese media entities like Xinhua and People’s Daily of involvement in spying and propaganda activities and said their staff based in the U.S. should be required to register as “foreign agents.”

The annual report of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission struck an alarmist tone about China’s growing global media influence, which congressional advisers warned was a threat to U.S. soft power.

The report discussed tools available in the U.S. to “curtail Beijing’s influence on U.S. media and its efforts to influence what people in the United States read and see regarding China.”

It recommended that “all staff of Chinese state-run media entities” be required to register with the U.S. government as “foreign agents” under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), which was enacted in 1938 to deal with Nazi propaganda.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the report “sheer fiction” and said it reflects their bias against China.

“This so-called committee has always been full of prejudice on China-related issues,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang told a daily press briefing on Thursday.

“The content in the relevant report is sheer fiction, and the viewpoint of the report reflects their bias and stereotype against China,” he said.

China urged the congressional commission to put an end to its “erroneous words and actions” on China-related issues and really play a constructive role in promoting the development of China-US relations.
