Another science balloon has, again, literally gone with the wind in China. This time, a weather balloon from the Chinese Academy of Sciences went missing in action during an experiment in Ji’nan, eastern China's Shandong province.
A notice for the missing balloon, which carries scientific research equipment and important data collected, has been posted by the Academy’s Institute of Atmospheric Physics, promising a 4,000 yuan reward for valuable tips, Ji’nan Daily reported.
Scientists from the research team believe that the balloon may have dropped somewhere in the Zhoucun and Zichuan districts of Zibo City, Shandong, as weather balloons automatically explode after floating above 30,000 meters.
The accident happened when the string attached to it broke off on Monday.
The call for help has been reposted by local authorities hoping to find the balloon and its scientific results as soon as possible.
Weather balloons usually carry a radiosonde for various atmospheric measures.
Last December, a weather balloon from Nanjing University also went MIA when its string was accidentally cut. There has no public report on the whereabouts of the missing balloon so far.
