Square dancing, with over millions of fans nationwide, is a two billion yuan industry in China, Workers' Daily reported on Sep.20, 2017.
About 100 million Chinese “Damas” across China engage in square dances. It is a mass form of entertainment in most people's eyes, and it has become a huge business opportunity.
Dance wear has become a popular item on online stores. Dancers will buy several sets for different seasons and occasions, creating huge demand. Moreover, an industry for teaching videos, costumes, and stereos is evolving into a large market.
We had only ten types of suits for square dancing, but now we have 200 styles and are employing more people to meet the demand, said Huang Qingqing, a clothes company owner. The dresses made by Huang's company enjoy good sales in both domestic and foreign markets.
China is stepping into an aging society. Elderly people usually have strong purchasing power, creating a thriving industry centered on their needs. In the future, square dance, tourism, health care, and other old age industries are expected to undergo further development.
