Chinese tech giant Huawei has launched the world’s first smartphone chipset with a dedicated neural-processing unit, marking a milestone for the company’s AI mobile research.
Unlike traditional mobile phone makers that focus on CPU and GPU configurations, Huawei is keen to promote its new Kirin 970 chipset as a mobile computing platform. According to statistics from Huawei, the Kirin 970 packs 5.5 billion transistors into a one-square-centimeter chip and is capable of performing the same AI computing tasks faster and with less power consumption.
“Huawei is committed to turning smart devices into intelligent devices by building end-to-end capabilities that support coordinated development of chips, devices, and the cloud. The first-of-its-kind Kirin 970 will bring powerful AI features to our devices,” said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group.
Yu also noted that the chipset will be used on the company’s flagship mobile phone Mate 10, which will be launched in October. Yu told the media that with the help of the new AI chipset, Huawei’s new mobile phones will outperform the upcoming Apple iPhone 8 and Samsung’s flagship products.
