OREO to compete in the mooncake sales for China’s Mid-Autumn Festival

By Jiang Jie (People's Daily Online)    15:47, August 23, 2017

If mooncakes with red beans or jujube paste are not already sweet enough for you, then fear not, because world famous cookie brand OREO will sell a special black-and-white mooncake to satisfy your sweet tooth for China’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

The OREO mooncakes are available online at Tmall and Mondelez. The four-pack package is priced at 118 yuan, while the six-pack one is sold at 158 yuan. Flavors include black chocolate, cocoa milk, cream and pineapple, and fudgy strawberry.

This marks the latest example of an international brand exploring business opportunities behind Chinese festivals, especially the Mid-Autumn Festival, as the traditional snack usually includes sweet fillings. Red beans and jujube paste are the most popular, while those with nuts or fruits tend to get mixed reviews. Recent years have also seen many new flavors hit the market, including untraditional flavors such as salty.

As far back as 2010, Starbucks began to sell coffee-flavored mooncakes. In 2012, Haagen-Dazs made its luxurious brand even more widely known for its ice cream mooncakes, which was sold at 798 yuan for the six mooncakes. The two brands’ mooncakes remain popular in China.

Even McDonald’s has attempted to sell mooncakes in 2013. However, the cooperative project with McCafe ended after the first trial.

China’s massive market has always been attractive for international food brands, which continue to create gimmicks to attract Chinese consumers.
