Alibaba on August 17 confirmed it led a $1.1 billion investment in Indonesia's Tokopedia, further accelerating the Chinese giant's expansion into Southeast Asia.
William Tanuwijaya, founder of Tokopedia, said the partnership with Alibaba will enhance Tokopedia's development. Founded in 2009, Tokopedia is Indonesia's largest e-commerce platform.
Alibaba sees Southeast Asia as a core international market. The group in April 2016 took over Lazada, the largest online shopping site in Southeast Asia. Alibaba also invested an additional $1 billion in the e-commerce company to boost its stake to 83 percent.
