A report from the UK tourism agency recently advised British businesses to focus on Harry Potter and Manchester United instead of welcome kisses and hugs, in order to gain more Chinese visitors, according to The Times.

Chinese visitors arrive in the UK with unique cultural expectations, such as museums and films, according to the report. They are mostly interested in The Royal Family, Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, and Downton Abbey.

In addition, English football is said to be a key attraction for Chinese tourists. Manchester United has the most support in China, followed by Liverpool, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur.

British businesses were advised to avoid over-familiarity with their Chinese guests, which might make them feel embarrassed.

The report highlighted that it was necessary to provide a pot noodles alongside tea and coffee-making facilities, as most Chinese are not interested in eating fish and chips, but do like wine. “In-room kettles to boil water are really important,” said a head of a state-funded trade agency.

Last year, 220,431 Chinese visited the UK, spending £513 million. UK tourism agencies are trying hard to gain back Chinese tourists as the number showed a drop compared to 2015.
