CRRC Dalian and Southwest Jiaotong University have jointly developed a new generation medium-low speed maglev train and completed the 120 km/h speed test, Chinanews.com reported on Aug. 8. The train set a new world record for medium-low speed maglev trains.
The train is capable of running at a maximum speed of 160 km/h. Compared with other maglev trains in operation, it runs faster and can better handle curves and ramps.
Insiders say that urban rail transits including subways, light rail, and streetcars cannot meet the operation requirements of long-distance stations due to cost, noise, and carrying factors. However, the new generation train has many advantages, such as medium passenger-carrying capacity, low noise, strong climbing ability, and a smaller turning radius.
Research conducted by the Chinese Academy of Engineering shows that China now has a mature environment for medium-low speed maglev transit development, and the country will put five or more such transit lines in operation by 2020. Currently, more than 10 large and middle-sized cities, including Beijing, Tianjin, Wuhan, Chengdu, and Guangzhou are planning to construct maglev transit systems.
According to CRRC Dalian, once put into operation, the new generation train will meet the medium-capacity rail transit demands and achieve rapid transportation between urban and suburban areas.
