China Jiangsu International enjoys 30 years of doing business in Africa

Established in 1980, China Jiangsu International Economic &Technical Cooperation Group Co., Ltd. (CJI) is a big state-owned comprehensive enterprise and is currently a top contractor, having contracting projects in dozens of locations throughout China.

“No matter how challenging a project is or how remote its location, CJI can certainly handle it. That's because we bring an unmatched combination of knowledge, skill, experience, and commitment to every contracting job we take on,” says the Group’s Vice President, Gu Yuesheng.

Addressing African Journalists, he said the Group has lots of international contracts and investment overseas, including fifteen African Countries where it has enjoyed operations for over about 30 years.

In the past 30 years, CJI has untaken more than 2000 labor service projects with a contract value of more than $600 million. The number of labor service personnel sent to work abroad reaches 200 thousand bringing an income of more than $1000 million and also resulted in a trade turnover of $4000 million with respect to the export of electromechanical equipment and materials while hundreds of domestic enterprises are thus introduced into the world markets. CJI 's overseas project contracting is ranked the No.1 of all other provincial level companies in china and its labor service business takes the lead in the circle. In the meantime, the import & export business is listed among the top 200 enterprises for achievement in export and the top 500 enterprises for achievement in both import & export.

“Building work and infrastructure development are the two major work we are doing in African countries, some of which are mostly under foreign aid international contracting projects funded by the World Bank and African Development Bank,” Gu said, and added that the Group has enjoyed a long term relationship with Africans and assured that it hopes to improve on the existing cooperation to benefit the continent.

He revealed that they employ locals ten times higher than Chinese Nationals. “We are bringing in experts from China to train Africans so as to enable them take up top positions in our projects for the benefit of their countries. We know that in the next sixty years we can’t beat competitions in Africa because some local companies are improving faster than ever,” says the Vice President.

The Group, he said finds it difficult to operate in some countries that are yet to address challenges like currency instability, insecurity, political tussles etc.

As it moves alongside China’s goal of going global, CJI has granted the rights to operate foreign contracted projects,labour cooperation, import & export trade and the Grade-A qualification for China's foreign aid projects of complete plant and foreign aid projects of material supply. CJI possesses the Grade-1 qualification for general contracting in housing construction project and the 1st grade qualification of general contracting in Municipal Public Works issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban & Rural Development, the Grade-1 qualification of professional contracting in building decoration engineering, mechanical and electrical installation engineering, steel structure engineering, building intelligent engineering design and construction, building curtain wall design and construction, fire-fighting facilities. Class-A qualification as the bidding agent for the government invested projects, the engineering project for the engineering consulting and for the equipment supervision. Every year, CJI is able to satisfy the assessment for its ISO90001 quality management system, ISO14001 environmental management system and GB/T28001 occupational health and safety system.

CJI adheres to the "Going Abroad" principle and is engaged in the international economic and technical cooperation, and in the internationalization and diversification of its business which has been development into the following six parts: Overseas Projects, Domestic Projects International Trade, City Investment, Engineering Consultancy and Labour Services.
