Sony unveils new game for its Playstation based on China’s highest-grossing animated film

“Monkey King: The Hero is Back,” China’s highest-grossing animated film, will soon be available on the PlayStation 4, marking another major effort by Sony to consolidate the market in China.

Hiroyuki Oda, deputy president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia, made the announcement at the company’s 15th China Digital Entertainment Expo & Conference (ChinaJoy) press conference on July 26.

The game is co-developed by Sony and Chinese developer October Media. It will be published by Oasis Games for worldwide release.

“Monkey King: The Hero is Back” is a 2015 Chinese animated movie starring Jackie Chan as the voice actor for the Monkey King character in the move’s English version. It tells the story of the Monkey King and Jiang Liuer, who is believed to be the previous life of Tang Monk in the classic Chinese mythological novel “Journey to the West.” It was the highest-grossing animated movie in China until it was surpassed by “Zootopia” and “Kung Fu Panda.”

According to the trailer, players can play the two characters from the movie and will be able to experience the original movie in addition to new scenes and enemies. The action game will also look better than the original movie.

“We are excited to show this ancient Chinese myth of traditional Chinese aesthetic to PlayStation players,” said Tian Xiaopeng, director of the original movie.

Getting unique IP products of China is one of the three software strategies of Sony in China, according to Oda. The company also plans to introduce popular overseas games and to cultivate excellent “Made-in-China” contents.

Oda also revealed several VR games for the PlayStation from Chinese studios selected from the “China Hero Project,” including thriller game “Kill X” by VIVA Games and the fantasy combat game “The Walker” by Haymaker. Both of the Chinese-made games will be released in the U.S. and Europe.

The “China Hero Project” is a PlayStation program that supports Chinese game developers to enter the Chinese and global gaming markets. It is supported by partners including Epic Games, CRI Middleware, Hearts United Group, Silicon Studio, and Unity Technologies (Shanghai) Limited, who aim to expand China’s console game market, as well as provide development techniques and debugging services in order to improve the quality of Chinese-developed games.
