Baidu battered for promoting scandal-ridden medical facility

(People's Daily Online)    16:35, July 10, 2017

China’s search engine giant Baidu has once again raised public concern over the credibility of its medical information after the company's map service "mistakenly" linked the address of a scandal-ridden medical facility to the search result of a public hospital.

According to a post circulating on Sina Weibo, a search for Shenzhen Children's Hospital yields several results, with Yuandong Women and Children’s Hospital appearing in the second position. The hospital is allegedly run by entrepreneurs from the city of Putian in Eastern China's Fujian province. Putianese-owned medical facilities have a notorious reputation for selling folk remedies and providing false medical information.

The post also noted that many parents have been misguided by the false information, suggesting that the result may be related to Baidu’s online advertising services.

This is not the first time that Baidu has invited public concern over its connection with Putianese-hospitals. In 2016, Baidu was probed by Chinese authorities after a 21-year-old student died due to an ineffective treatment for a rare cancer, which he received from a Putianese-owned medical facility that he found online via the search engine.

In response to the scandal, Baidu released an official announcement on Sunday, denouncing the rumor that advertising affects the map’s search results.

“The incident was caused by the [system’s] erroneous judgment of the hospital's name. We have already corrected the search result, and the service has been rectified,” read the announcement. It went on to say that Baidu’s map service is free and that the speculation by some media outlets is false.
