Zoo erects 'donkey monument' after feeding live donkey to tigers

(People's Daily Online)    13:23, July 04, 2017

After creating a bloody scene by feeding a live donkey to tigers, a zoo in Changzhou, eastern China's Jiangsu province, has renewed attention with the construction of a “donkey monument.”

Set up on July 1, the life-sized monument was placed outside the tiger’s den at Wild Animal World in Changzhou, Jiangsu, where a donkey was dragged and pushed into the river to feed the tigers on June 5.

Video footage by witnesses showed two tigers swim up to the donkey and bite its neck, killing the donkey. The bloody and cruel scene was described as more horrible than amusing.

An inscription at the base of the monument says that the donkey “should have enjoyed its life, but was unfairly treated by its owner.”

“We hope to win over the public. We hereby set up this monument in the hope that justice will always prevail," read the inscription.

According to a stockholder of the zoo, surnamed Li, the monument was set up to remind tourists to be cautious during their visit to the zoo "so they’re not devoured like the donkey." It also carried "more meaning" as the donkey was "wronged” and therefore “should be remembered," reported Chengdu Business Daily.

The cruel live feeding was allegedly conducted by a zoo stockholder in protest of a local court ruling. The zoo lost a financial lawsuit and had its assets—including the animals—frozen, according to Thepaper.cn.
