A glass cup purchased by a woman surnamed Wang from an IKEA store in Beijing recently exploded, breaking Wu’s tooth and causing her lips to bleed, CCTV reported on May 26.

Wu said she bought the cup from the IKEA in Xihongmen in 2016. Filled with room temperature water, the cup exploded very suddenly just as she was about to drink from it on May 20.
IKEA’s marketing department in Beijing has apologized to Wu and promised to compensate her for the incident. The department explained that the spontaneous explosion of its glass cups, which has happened a number of times before, can be attributed to the impact of external forces during the product's transportation, use and maintenance. The store has launched an investigation into the case, and IKEA headquarters will recall the affected products from shelves.

Previous IKEA glass cup explosions happened in 2016 and 2014. The company recalled a batch of LYDA cups in 2013, after 20 cases of explosion were reported worldwide.
