Shanghai recently made its first step toward offering “readable buildings.” On May 26, 10 plates printed with QR codes were hung on the exteriors of 10 landmark buildings in the city. Historical information and the stories behind the buildings can be obtained by anyone who scans the codes.

Park Hotel, Yangtze Hotel and Shanghai Concert Hall were among the landmarks that received the special QR codes. In addition, information about 50 more historical buildings on East Nanjing Road has been gathered and edited; now it just waits to be encoded.

East Nanjing Road is a blend of history and modernity, boasting a great deal of historical architecture built in the 1920s and '30s. The community's subdistrict office hopes to tell the stories behind these buildings in a fresh and innovative way.

According to the office, its “readable buildings” function on an open platform. Anyone is able to add or edit information. Organizers hope this interaction will make the city a more energetic and friendly place.
