All across the world, fans of the game Overwatch paid tributes to a Chinese player on the one-year anniversary of his death, remembering him for the heroic action that ultimately led to his demise.
Hongyu Wu, a 20-year-old university student from Guangdong province, passed away on May 23, 2016, the day before Overwatch, a game he was eagerly anticipating, was finally released. On that day, Wu attempted to catch a thief who had snatched his friend’s motorbike, but died tragically in a resulting traffic accident.
In memory of the anniversary, Overwatch fans posted a video clip titled "Hero Never Dies" on social media platforms including Youtube and Reddit. In the clip, five of the game’s main characters bow to a spacesuit bearing the name Hongyu in Chinese, which was added by the game’s developer, Blizzard, as a tribute to Wu in 2016.
Many fans have expressed their respect for Wu, claiming that they salute Wu’s memorial suit each time they play the game.
“Every time I play on that map, I salute his suit. I don’t care if I’m attacked, it’ll still be worth it,” a netizen with the userame Ismail X commented under the video.
Several other players cited the American poet Mary Elizabeth Frye’s masterpiece, "Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep" to commemorate Wu’s death, quoting: “I’m not there, I did not die.”
