Wang Bingyan, an 87-year-old veteran, was awarded a medal of honor by Ofo, one of China’s largest bike-sharing companies, for volunteering to repair sabotaged Ofo bikes in his city. Wang was invited to the Beijing headquarters of Ofo to receive the honor.
The octogenarian first encountered the trendy shared bikes in an unpleasant way—by seeing them sabotaged or abandoned in ditches while he was walking the streets of Kunming, Yunnan province.
Wang decided he would fix the bikes one by one. The following day, he and his wife collected 12 broken bikes and transported them to his repair shop. The old couple even installed a storage battery on their tricycle so they could transport more broken bikes at one time.
In just two weeks, the elderly man repaired over 70 bikes. Wang’s good deed was lauded by people in his city. A city management volunteer also called upon residents not to destroy the bikes so that Wang doesn’t need to work so hard.
