Temperatures across China are predicted to hit extreme highs from May 17 to 19, according to the latest data released by China’s National Meteorological Center (NMC). Some areas in Beijing will see temperatures as high as 37 degrees Celsius.

Forecast said that the temperature in eastern Inner Mongolia, northern China and the Huang-Huai area will surge to 35 or 38 degrees Celsius on May 18. Beijing will likely experience a peak temperature of 37 degrees Celsius.

However, influenced by cold air starting from May 19, temperatures will gradually drop from northern China all the way to southern China, falling to almost 30 degrees Celsius in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei on May 20.

“The high temperatures will only last three days, which is normal in the case of this weather system,” said Cai Xiangning, a senior engineer at NMC.

Experts remind people to limit their time outdoors between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. as much as possible, as well as to protect themselves from the sun. Departments tasked with forest fire prevention are also on high alert.
