Wuhan zoo denounces rumors of white-nosed panda being sick

Wuhan Zoo on Wednesday denounced rumors of its panda being sick due to poor living conditions, pledging to provide better care for the protected animal.

“Our Panda House was built more than ten years ago. In order to upgrade our facilities, we have to apply for government funds to cover the huge expense. As for public concerns over our panda’s health, no signs of illness were found at the time of the medical examination,” an employee of the zoo told the Huaxi City Daily.

The remarks were made after several pictures of Weiwei, a 12-year-old male panda, went viral online. The pictures show white spots on Weiwei’s nose, which have worried visitors, many of whom have blamed the zoo for not taking good care of the precious animal.

“Weiwei is in good health right now. The white spots on his nose might be caused by insufficient synthesis of pigments. The panda is 12 years old, which is equivalent to 36 human years. Its whitened nose might just be a sign of aging,” said Wang Mingquan, Weiwei’s veterinarian.
