The Belt and Road Initiative will facilitate global energy interconnectivity

By Du Xiaofei (People's Daily Online)    17:24, May 10, 2017

The Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation is to be held in Beijing from May 14 to 15, 2017. Twenty-eight heads of state and government leaders will attend the event. Wang Yimin, secretary general of the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), said that a global energy network is a new engine and one of the best vehicles for the development of the Belt and Road Initiative. It will facilitate economic and trade cooperation between all nations, leading to mutual benefits and win-win results.

Wang pointed out that despite the imbalanced distribution and energy demand of countries along the Belt and Road route, clean energy resources are generally abundant. For some countries, they are even complementary. As for China, our technologies, facilities and standards can go global. This will further spur the development of energy, as well as the economies of China and other “Belt and Road” nations.

Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed a global energy network at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in 2015. This would help to meet global power demand using clean and green methods. Since its founding, GEIDCO has welcomed 274 members from 22 countries and regions around the world.

During the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, GEIDCO will sign agreements or memoranda of cooperation with a number of international organizations. GEIDCO will also participate in the planning and research of regional grid interconnectivity, delivering concrete results to countries along the Belt and Road route.
