Square dancing transforms China into real-life La La Land

Recently a group of passengers danced on a Xi'an highway in the midst of a serious traffic jam. The whimsical performance was an ingenious effort to relieve their frustration and anxiety.

The scene attracted unexpected attention from Japanese netizens after the video was posted on Twitter. Many Japanese people commented that the dancing reminded them of scenes from the movie “La La Land.”

As a matter of fact, group dancing is very popular in China. Dancers can be spotted practicing in squares and parks all over the country. Most of the “square dancers” are past middle age, and some are even in their seventies and eighties. The practice serves as entertainment, recreation and a means of socializing.

These days, square-dancing competitions are plentiful, and some excellent dancers even have their performances broadcast to the public. In addition, fast-paced and catchy songs on occasion sweep the whole nation.

Apart from aging and elderly dancers, more and more young people have discovered their love for the activity. In addition to its health benefits, dancing is a fun way to release positive energy and make society more pleasant.

So don't be surprised the next time you see dancers in a public square. Instead, consider joining them and experiencing the charm of dancing!
