Australian police are working on the extradition of a Chinese “healer” after his “slapping therapy” allegedly caused the death of a six-year-old boy. The self-claimed “miracle doctor” is now in custody for a similar manslaughter case in the UK.

The 53-year-old healer, Xiao Hongci, has been promoting his signature “Paida Lajin” therapy since 2009. The controversial therapy can purge toxins from patients by slapping them or getting them to slap themselves, according to Xiao. He says that it is derived from traditional Chinese medicine and can cure everything from diabetes to hypertension.

Though the therapy is welcomed by a large group of patients, it has allegedly caused the death of Aidan Fenton, a six-year-old Australian diabetic in 2015, and Danielle Carr-Gomm, a 71-year-old British diabetic in 2016.

“The so-called Paida Lajin is pseudoscience. Traditional Chinese medicine does have a similar treatment called Gua Sha, in which the skin is scraped to produce light bruising, but the two techniques are totally different. Xiao asks his patients to slap themselves as vigorously as possible, but this may pose threat to their health,” Wang Jin, a Beijing-based Chinese medical massager, told People’s Daily Online.

According to a report by Beijing Times, Xiao and his company earned 1.8 million RMB in 2011 by selling books, DVDs, and equipments for the therapy.
