The main construction of T3A terminal at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport, due to open this June, has officially been completed. The terminal, with a planned area of 530,000 square meters, will house China Eastern Airlines and four additional concourses.
Construction of the terminal began in 2013, but only after a sizable mountain was moved out of the way, according to Shi Peng, a general engineer who works with the contractor. Shi said his company evacuated a total of 3 million cubic meters of earth and stones to make way for the terminal. The preparatory stage took about half a year.
The T3A terminal building boasts unique architectural design and logistical features. For example, it will be the first airport in China to use a fully automatic baggage check-in system, with over 30 automatic machines. The terminal has a fire control area of 280,000 square meters, and will utilize fiber-optic heat detectors.
