Due to a lack of oxygen to his brain during birth, 8-year-old Xin Xin was diagnosed with cerebella atrophy and lost nearly all his sight when he was 1 year old. Xin Xin’s parents are migrant workers, so the boy is being raised by his 68-year-old grandmother. To ensure that Xin Xin receives a proper education, the grandmother, Liu Ruixia, took him to study braille at a special school in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province. Besides accompanying Xin Xin to school, Liu stands outside his classroom, listening to the teachers and taking notes. She does this so she can review the material with Xin Xin after class in case he doesn’t fully understand the lesson.
