Female tourist attacked in Lijiang

A female tourist surnamed Dong claimed on microblogging website Weibo that she was beaten by a dozen men while eating barbecue at a restaurant in Lijiang, Yunnan province. Her story quickly became an internet sensation.

The Public Security Bureau of Lijiang announced that it has created a special group for investigation of the malicious assault after coming across the message. According to the post, written by Dong, she and two of her friends were beaten by the men while dining at a restaurant last November. Her attackers scraped her face with broken beer bottles and filmed the whole encounter. In addition, the men stole valuables belonging to her and her friends. Only a cellphone was left behind, which Dong used to call an ambulance.

Dong claimed that no one at the site of the crime reported it to police. Local police have since acknowledged the case and investigated six suspects, leading to several arrests, and the case will undergo further investigation.
