570-gram premature infant defies odds to survive

By Sun Wenyu (People's Daily Online)    11:00, January 22, 2017

On July 6, 2016, a 570-gram infant was born 13 weeks early in Changsha, Hunan province. The baby was named Qiyue, which means July in Chinese, as a mark of this unforgettable event.

Qiyue's mother conceived and miscarried three babies before her daughter was born. Immediately after she was born, Qiyue was just the size of a palm. Suffering from multiple complications, the tiny baby breathed only with the help of a respirator for two months.

In order to ensure a close parent-child relationship, Qiyue's mother came frequently to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to breastfeed and bond with her baby. These efforts not only improved mutual understanding between the baby's parents and medical staff, they also contributed to the infant's recovery.

Qiyue's parents played a 10-minute audio clip to her every day for two months, encouraging her to persevere through her struggles. The result of the baby's most recent physical examination indicate that Qiyue is in good health.
