Lei Aixia, a 49-year-old woman living in Baoji, Shaanxi province with her disabled son, donated the organs of her recently deceased husband to three patients, in order to reciprocate the kindness she has known from people of all walks of life.
Lei’s son was paralyzed in a car accident six years ago. With the support of the government and help from kind citizens, she moved her family into a house with inexpensive rent, and her son began to receive an allowance of 170 RMB each month. In addition, the local Disabled Persons' Federation provided her son with a rehabilitation bed and a wheelchair.
On Dec. 11, 2016, another misfortune struck the family: Lei’s husband, Zhang Yongzhou, suffered severe trauma to his head, again during a car accident, and was later declared brain dead. After asking her husband's siblings for permission, Lei decided to donate Zhang’s organs to other patients in dire need.
The three patients who accepted the organ transplants have already recovered, which has offered Lei a measure of relief. The experience has also inspired Lei’s son to become an organ donor, because he wants to reciprocate the kindness so many people have shown to him.
