Shaanxi Normal University has offered an official explanation on its Weibo for the installation of "female urinals" on the school's campus, saying that only one set of urinals was actually installed. In addition, women on campus are free to opt in or out of the urinals, though the school emphasized that they really can save water and cut down on the spread of diseases.

The university also stressed that it has had female urinals installed for several years. They are not such a novelty, as many cities in China and abroad have installed such facilities since before 2005.
