Beijing's narrowest hutong regains original appearance

By Li Yan (People's Daily Online)    16:19, January 09, 2017

The facade of Qianshi Hutong, Beijing's narrowest such alley, is expected to revert to its original form, as a project moves forward to protect historical and cultural sites in Beijing's Xicheng district. A total of 700 households are expected to be relocated over the course of the project.

After all illegal buildings are demolished, a bank will be built in the hutong. About 40 houses are to be vacated, according to reports. At less than 1 meter wide and 50 meters long, Qianshi Hutong, which translates to "money market," was once the financial center of Beijing, home to numerous private banks.

The hutong is now a residential area under district-level protection. Xicheng will also relocate several famous residences, including the former residence of Tan Xinpei, the Peking Opera artist, and Langfang Toutiao Lane.
