9-year-old girl becomes pillar of her family

(People's Daily Online)    19:35, December 14, 2016

Li Chunyan is a 9-year-old girl in Chongqing municipality. She lives with her paralyzed father and 70-year-old grandmother. Chunyan helps her grandmother with daily chores, and takes care of her father. She always shows optimism when facing misfortunes. Last month, she was named one of the Top 10 Filial Teens, as determined by the publicity department of the CPC Chongqing committee.

Chunyan’s mother died of cancer in 2010 when she was only 4. Shouldering the burden of the whole family, her father, Li Lu, had to leave the girl with her grandmother to work at a construction site in Chongqing.

Misfortune hit the family again in 2012, when Li fell off a building at work, rendering him paraplegic. Even worse, he did not receive any compensation because the boss fled; he had to pay all his medical expenses himself.

Despite these misfortunes, what impresses Li most is the fact that his daughter never cries. Instead, she tries to console him. Whenever Li yells from pain, Chunyan comes to his side and says: "Dad, you must take care of yourself." He knows that the girl worries he will lose his will to live. She is so considerate that she always holds back her own tears, afraid that her tears would cause her father and grandmother to have a breakdown.

To ensure Chunyan's nutrition and health, her grandmother occasionally cooks special dishes, such as fried eggs. Nevertheless, the girl always insists that her grandmother and father eat first. This filial behavior touches all the family's neighbors.

The government provides some care and assistance to the family. They now live on a low-income monthly allowance of 400 RMB each for Chunyan's father and grandmother, as well as a subsidy of 600 RMB per month for Chunyan. Chunyan is very grateful for the assistance.

"I want to thank the uncles and aunties who help us. I will study hard and repay them in the future," she promised.
