The parents of Nie Shubin, a man who was wrongly executed 21 years ago for rape and murder, have hired two lawyers to apply for state compensation for their son's death.

On Dec. 11, Nie Xuesheng and Zhang Huanzhi, Nie's father and mother, entrusted lawyers Gu Guangwei and Wang Dianxue with their compensation case. The two lawyers told Beijing News that they will go to the Higher People’s Court of Hebei province to apply for the compensation, which includes death compensation, funeral expenses, personal freedom compensation, Nie's parents’ living expenses and moral damages. The sum of 2,000 RMB, which Nie’s family paid to the victim of the rape case, will also be included.

According to Wang, the amount of the compensation has not yet been decided. Zhang said they are still discussing the amount, but she “will include all items that meet the requirements.”

Nie, a resident of Luquan County in Hebei province, was convicted of raping and murdering a woman in the Hebei provincial capital Shijiazhuang in 1995, and was executed the same year at the age of 21. The case reemerged in 2005 when another man, Wang Shujin, admitted guilt in the case, acknowledging that Nie was innocent. The Supreme People’s Court decided to retry the case in June 2016, and finally announced Nie's innocence on Dec. 2, 2016.
