Multitasking neonatal nurse becomes online sensation

Recently, a photo of a young nurse feeding an infant patient while taking care of administrative tasks has been widely reposted and liked online.

Runrun, the infant in the photo, has a serious congenital heart disease. The baby was hospitalized in September at West China Hospital of Sichuan University. Her life was saved by two major surgeries and good care from the hospital's medical staff.

“I have to [multitask like this] because patients’ information must be input on time,” said Luo Min, the nurse in the photo.

Runrun’s parents left home soon after she was born, and her elderly grandmother could not look after her properly. Medical staff at the hospital decided to take turns caring for the infant, feeding, changing and bathing her.

When Runrun was first sent to the hospital, she was suffering from cardiac failure, hepatic failure, respiratory failure, severe edema and malnutrition. After consultation, doctors concluded that her severe illness was caused by heart disease; if cured once and for all, they concluded that Runrun could live a long and healthy life.

However, since Runrun was so weak, her nutrition leading up to the surgeries was a matter of real concern. To prepare Runrun for the surgeries, medical staff came up with a precise plan for the infant’s sustenance, adjusting the plan to shifting circumstances every day. Any increase in the infant’s weight brought them great comfort, as it indicated that she was gaining strength. Runrun has now entered recovery after her two risky surgeries.

The medical expenses for Runrun’s treatment were covered by a public welfare fund. With family poverty taken into consideration, the financial situation will be reported to the local government after Runrun leaves the hospital, according to Wu Xiuhe, the project director of the fund.
