Seventy-nine years after the Nanjing Massacre in December 1937, there are only 108 registered survivors still alive. As the third National Memorial Day will take place on Dec. 13, those survivors will once again be in the public eye.

Ma Xiuying was born in 1922. In the winter of 1937, her brother, then 18, was dragged to a car by Japanese intruders, never to be seen again. She and her mother escaped to the refugee zone and survived. Ma often spends time at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall.

Yi Cuilan was born in 1923. Her family disguised her as a boy and sent her to the refugee zone. After several twists and turns, she finally managed a narrow escape, but not without several injuries that act up often even today.

Zhang Fuzhi was born in 1927 and died on Nov. 26, 2016. He and his father were severely beaten by Japanese invaders in their own home. Zhang's right eye was wounded and infected, eventually causing him to lose vision. Zhang couldn’t recognize his family, and could only walk in one direction.

Zhu Sizi was born in 1920. Her house was looted and then set aflame by Japanese invaders in 1937. She and her family only escaped the disaster by hiding in a cave behind her house.

Li Gaoshan was born in 1925. He joined the army when he was only 13 years old, fiercely fending off Japanese intruders in Nanjing. He managed to escape, despite being captured by the Japanese.
