Ever since then-Prime Minister David Cameron brought Chinese President Xi Jinping to enjoy a pint at the Plough during Xi’s state visit last year, the U.K. pub has become a hotspot for Chinese tourists in London. Now, taking advantage of the pub’s popularity and mulling even bigger plans, Chinese company SinoFortone has officially purchased the pub, striking a deal through property firm Christie and Co., according to the BBC.
Not only did tourists begin flocking to the Plough after Xi’s visit, they also seem to be embracing pub culture as a whole.
“The English pub concept is growing very fast in China, and it’s the best way to culturally link people from different countries and built friendships,” Peter Zhang, managing director of SinoFortone, was quoted as saying by the BBC. “We see bigger opportunities, namely countries lying between between China and Europe, where we believe we could also export the U.K. brand internationally.”
According to Paul Hackett, the current manager of the Plough, the pub’s appeal is that it’s “a nice pub with a beautiful atmosphere and clientele,” he told The Guardian. Freya Pharo, the bar manager, noted that the pub is a comfortable tradition in many customers’ lives.
It remains to be seen whether Zhang and SinoFortone will be able to replicate this atmosphere in other locations, but they certainly intend to try. In addition to the pub, SinoFortone is also involved in other U.K. investments, including theme parks and railroads.
