Chinese border city issues safety alert after military conflicts in Myanmar
Chinese border police register the identities of Burmese people.

The People's Government of Ruili, a city on the China-Myanmar border, issued a safety alert to local residents on Nov. 22, warning them to stay away from regions close to the border, an official with the publicity department of Ruili confirmed to Thepaper.cn.

The safety alert noted that one resident had already been injured by stray bullets since military conflicts broke out in Myanmar on Nov. 20. The government also instructed citizens to evacuate from dangerous regions to avoid potential injury. If they chose to stay, the notice read, they should stay indoors and avoid activities on balconies and roofs, as well as near windows.

The new regulations require residents to register at the local police station if they host visitors from abroad in their homes; hotels are already required to register foreign guests at the local police station.

According to Zhang Fang, a local resident who once helped to construct a refugee camp for Myanmar refugees, all residents in the town of Wanting have received the alert. She said gunfire is still audible, but local people have mostly returned to their everyday lives. In addition, relief materials, including quilts and clothing, are arriving in Wanting.

The Chinese consulate in Mandalay, Myanmar has issued a travel alert to Chinese citizens.
