Crowd-funded rooftop sports park to open in Hangzhou

By Sun Wenyu (People's Daily Online)    16:18, November 08, 2016

A large rooftop sports park in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province will be officially opened to the public in mid-November. Located on the rooftop of a shopping mall, the park was built at a cost of 8 million RMB ($118 million), which was raised through crowd-funding coordinated by more than 30 local sports fans.

Coming from all walks of life, the fund-raisers are united by their love for sports. One fund-raiser, surnamed Wang, said he looked forward to enjoying a sense of belonging on the local courts.

Nine sports fields are included in the park's design. Currently, six soccer fields and one basketball court have already been completed. All the courts are furnished with goals, rest areas and lighting. The courts are surrounded by fencing, ensuring that balls cannot be kicked or thrown too far out of bounds.

Wang said that the park initially began with 5.5 million RMB in investment, though that amount has now grown to 8 million. After noticing the 10,000-square-meter rooftop at the end of the last year, the founding sports fans decided it would be the perfect location for several fields. Now, more than 30 companies have contacted the park to rent its fields. The rental price for a five-a-side soccer court is 400 RMB per two-hour session. Two hours on the basketball court can be had for 320 RMB.
