'Can you take Trump instead?': Americans express sadness upon pandas' departure

(People's Daily Online)    17:34, November 07, 2016

There are two days left for Americans to make their final choice regarding who will be their president for the next four years. For some, it is a hard decision. However, the upcoming election is not all that weighs on some Americans; adding to the upset is the departure of two beloved pandas from a Georgia zoo.

Mei Lun and Mei Huan, who have spent their lives up till now at a zoo in Atlanta, Georgia, are the first pair of surviving giant panda twins ever born in the U.S. The duo arrived in Chengdu on Nov. 5, greeted by 170 kilograms of bamboo that the zoo prepared before they left.

According to an agreement reached by China and the U.S., panda cubs born in the U.S. to parents on loan from China are to be returned to China before turning 4 years old. They are then to participate in breeding projects in China. The National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C. has also announced plans to send its cub, Baobao, back to China next year.

Americans expressed their love and sadness via Facebook and Twitter. The same scene played out in 2010, when Americans saw Taishan off on a snowy day.

Facebook user Koeyoshi Yokohama commented, "Can't they take Trump instead?" Others commented that they couldn't believe Baobao would be leaving, and refused to accept the panda's departure.
