On Oct. 27, a man was shot dead in Dongguan, Gungdong province beside an armored cash transportation vehicle. Witnesses said the man had chased the vehicle and threw bricks at it, which resulted in his death.
According to a video recorded by a witness, the victim began to throw bricks at the armored vehicle’s window. The vehicle stopped after the man had chased it for hundreds of meters. The man continued to knock at the windows with bricks until the windows broke. The video didn’t record what happened next - the fatal shooting.
Shop owners nearby verified the incident but said they knew nothing about the man’s behavior. One bystander said that the man had quarreled with the driver after his motorbike was scratched by the armored vehicle. Police have not yet been able to verify this claim.
Regarding the larger significance of the incident, the question of whether the escort should have used a gun has attracted a wide variety of opinions online. According to existing law in China, armored vehicle escorts are allowed to carry firearms.
The armored car company claimed that the escort's safety was threatened by the man’s attack, and the attacker was given plenty of warnings to stop. Nonetheless, the man continued attacking the vehicle. Following emergency procedures, the escort finally used a riot gun with a rubber bullet. The victim was shot, and died before an ambulance arrived.
The incident is still under investigation by police.
