Man Steals Luxury Car Every Night to Impress Friends, Returns in the Morning

By Luo Ensi (People's Daily Online)    03:21, October 22, 2016

For three consecutive nights, a young man got away with stealing a luxury Land Rover from his neighbors in Hangzhou, China’s eastern Zhejiang province. The vehicle is said to be worth RMB1 million ($148,000).

Starting from October 15, the 19-year-old suspect, surnamed Zhang, was taking the car to Hangzhou’s famous West Lake to impress friends and appear as a wealthy young bachelor. The real owner of the car, surnamed Wang, didn’t realize until Zhang had “borrowed” the car three nights in a row.

Only when Wang’s wife took another car to pick Wang up did they notice that the Land Rover had mysteriously disappeared. They notified the authorities, who caught Zhang in the act the next evening. Zhang confessed to “picking” the key up in a wealthy residential area. Understanding that usually a car owner would need the car during the day, he decided to steal the car in the evening. And each time before returning the vehicle, Zhang would wash the car thoroughly and refill the gas up to exactly where meter had been before.

Zhang also stressed that he had no intention to steal the vehicle but just borrow it temporarily.

But authorities discovered Zhang had a previous record of theft. They also reportedly found keys from other luxury cars on his person.

Currently, Zhang is serving a 15-day sentence and must pay a RMB500 ($74) fine. The case is still under investigation.
