Meet Panghu, Kunming's first guide dog

By Sun Wenyu (People's Daily Online)    16:58, October 21, 2016

The first guide dog in Kunming, Yunnan province has been working for its master, Peng Bin, for 40 days. After being featured in numerous local media reports, the dog, nicknamed Panghu, has become something of a local celebrity.

Panghu came to Kunming on Sept. 10, after establishing his bond with Peng for 40 days at the China Guide Dog Training Center (CGDT) in Dalian, Liaoning province. Peng is a teacher at a local special education school. With Panghu as his escort, Peng saves 10 minutes every day during his commute. When Peng gives lectures, Panghu stands quietly next to the podium, waiting for the break time to gleefully play with students.

"I have been much happier ever since Panghu came to me," said Peng. His wife compared the acquisition of Panghu to having a new kid in the family, saying that the dog has brought more laughter to all of them.

Currently, about 10 dogs are trained by CGDT each year, and the number of guide dogs in service across China is around 100. However, China's blind and visually impaired population reached 12.63 million at the end of 2010. This means that not everyone who applies for a guide dog is able to receive one. All applicants must go through a strict assessment, including analysis of their commutes, potential allergies, and their ability to take care of a dog.

"I'm fortunate to have passed the assessment, and to have such a good relationship with Panghu," said Peng. He is planning to bring Panghu to a marathon in Kunming in December, hoping to promote awareness of the blind community.
