Life on China's Liaoning aircraft carrier

By Sun Wenyu (People's Daily Online)    15:20, October 20, 2016

The Liaoning is China's first aircraft carrier. With some 3,000 cabins on more than 20 floors, the flattop accommodates more than 1,000 people. Though management and logistics are a big issue for such a giant ship, the Liaoning nevertheless offers a wide variety of facilities to soldiers on board.

As an example of the ship's efficiency, the Liaoning's on-board laundry service is managed by specific personnel so that soldiers always have access to clean clothes. Wang Ban and Wang Fengtao, two soldiers responsible for laundry, are tasked with washing about 1,000 kilograms of dirty clothes every day. Though it's tiring, they believe the job is a worthwhile one, since it allows them to facilite the work of everyone else on board.

In addition, open "book corners" are available 24 hours a day to everyone on the carrier. Anyone can donate or borrow books at any time.

A major highlight of the flattop is its on-board cafeterias. More than 10 dining halls provide different types of food at different times of the day. Soldiers can have their pick of six staple dishes, four appetizers, two main dishes and two desserts at every meal. There is also unlimited ice cream and beverages. In addition, every soldier receives a dessert gift box before going on leave to spend time with their families.

After each meal, a specific squad consisting of 11 soldiers washes the dishes. They clean 5,000 pieces of tableware each day, or a total over 1 million every year.

Additional special features of the ship include a private dorm area with secure fingerprint access for the 100 female soldiers on board, and sports facilities such as basketball and badminton courts. There are also ATMs, a supermarket and a hospital for the soldiers' convenience.
