User reports 4th Galaxy Note 7 explosion in China

(People's Daily Online)    17:08, September 28, 2016

A Chinese Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smart phone user has reported that his device exploded after being charged for the first time on Sept. 26.

The user, surnamed Hui, said that after the charge finished, he picked his phone up, only to notice it emitting black smoke. Soon enough, the phone exploded, Hui said.

"I noticed news about the Note 7’s explosion and recall. Samsung said the phones sold in China were safe, so I bought it,” he explained.

The package and receipt of the phone.

Hui said he bought the phone on JD.com, an online shopping platform in China. A photo provided by Hui shows that the phone was manufactured in September. There are two scorch marks on the front side of the phone, which look like images of other exploded Galaxy Note 7 phones posted online by foreign users.

JD.com has confirmed that the phone was sold on their platform, but said Samsung is responsible for the after-sale service.

Hui has demanded that Samsung respond to the explosion and halt sales of the product. He said he is willing to let a third party test the phone. An officer with Samsung’s public relations department said the company does not have any response to this case.

This is the fourth explosion of a Note 7 reported in China since the phone went on sale on Sept. 1. After the first explosion was reported in China, the Korean smart phone-maker said in a statement that the incident was caused by external heating, and that it had nothing to do with the phone's battery.

Samsung was forced to recall 2.5 million Note 7 handsets globally, following complaints that faulty batteries caused the phones to explode while charging. But its recall plan in China, or lack thereof, has triggered widespread dissatisfaction among Chinese consumers.

According to China's quality watchdog, Samsung decided to recall 1,858 units of the phone, which were sold through several different channels, including Samsung's own website. However, none of the phones officially sold in China were included in the recall. Samsung stated that it uses a different battery supplier in China, so the phones sold in the Chinese market are safe, and therefore not included in the recall.
