China officially kicked off its third Cybersecurity Week on Sept. 19 in Wuhan, Hubei province. The event, which aims to raise public awareness of Internet security issues, will run from Sept. 19 to 25.

Jointly held by six top-level state departments, including the Cyberspace Administration of China and the Ministries of Education and Public Security, the theme of this year’s event is “Cybersecurity serves and relies on the people.”

This theme is in line with President Xi Jinping’s remarks at a cyberspace security symposium in April, at which he said that “securing the online environment is the shared responsibility of all stakeholders, including the government, enterprises, social organizations and netizens.”

According to Thepaper.cn, a cyber security technical summit will be held during Cybersecurity Week, which will focus on key issues including the cultivation of Internet professionals and the security of big data. Security specialists and Internet executives from foreign countries including Russia, the U.S. and South Africa will deliver speeches at the summit, while experts who have contributed to cyberspace security will be recognized.

The week-long event comes after a series of cybersecurity incidents in China, which have stirred public concern about data security. According to an online survey administered in June by the Internet Society of China, 54 percent of respondents said they believed the leakage of private information online was rampant, with 84 percent claiming to have personally suffered from leaks.

The economic losses incurred by online fraud and private information leaks in China totaled 91.5 billion RMB during the second half of 2015 and the first half of this year, Xinhua reported in August.

China has held two previous Cybersecurity Weeks. The theme of last year’s event was “Protect youngsters who surf the Internet.”
